Ning or not?

Dear Readers,

I do apologize for the brief hiatus from my blogger duties--strictly a no-no in the social media world, I know. I've been focused on mastering the social networks the past few months--personally and professionally--and if I have learned anything, it's that we are dealing with an ever expanding space.

LinkedIn was my first experiment, but since I engaged about two years ago I have also become a member of:

1) Facebook
2) Naymz
3) Doostang
4) MySpace

and just the other day had an invite to "Pulse". What's a girl to do? So many friends, so little time.

In my exploratory travels, I came upon Ning. If you aren't familiar with Ning, it is an online service that allows you to create, customize and share your own social network. I struggle with Ning, as a network is only as good as the effort put into it, and why would I create my own when I have five others I can tap into (with overly time consuming applications like Scrabulous I might add)that are already developed?

That said, I like to keep an open mind, and I think it might be a good experiment with the Interactive Strategist team--I'll keep you posted on findings.

Putting on my interactive recruitment hat, I know there is a lot of value to social networking from a sourcing perspective. Truly successful companies have a social networking STRATEGY--and they understand how all the pieces and parts--from the careers website to Facebook to their print ad in the NY Times--work together. However, if a company were to build their OWN network, such as through using Ning, it would need to provide some sort of added value to the candidate. Unless I am an active seeker, why would I engage in a social network for Widget Co, Inc.? WIIFM?

Something I need to ponder...
