Does Lightning Strike Twice?
Okay, stupid question--it does. The real question ends "...in the same place." And sadly, in publishing, the answer is frequently "no."
Take, for example, one of my favorite small books, Paul Arden's It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be. Fantastic book by any measure, a must-read for every up-and-coming creative talent in an agency setting (and, if you haven't read it, not a jot about self-help). I wrote about this little book in an earlier posting so I won't repeat myself here (except to the extent that providing a link to my earlier posting does exactly that).
What I want to talk about here is another little book by the same author, this one called Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite. On the plus side of the ledger, Arden provides more pithy anecdotes and the crisp layout his earlier book offered. It also seems to have had a bigger production budget. But that's about all I can say for it, beyond that it's a cautionary tale illustrating the risks inherent in trying to turn life's distilled wisdom into a franchise.
What a shame.
