An American in . . .

Well I've gone from a blizzard in Calgary to 90+ degree temperatures in Australia all with one small suitcase and a rather large laptop bag. Despite the stringent weight regulations on Quantas, I've been able to make my way through mostly with luggage in hand. I felt like an excessive/paranoid American until I missed my flight via Calgary-SFO-Sydney. Stuck at SFO for an extra night I stopped rationalizing and embraced my wardrobe choices.
The oddest part of the trip so far is that nearly everywhere I go I am surrounded by Americans! The couple I met this morning was from Oregon. The lady I met yesterday Virginia. Etc.
The idea of seeking the familiar and the comfortable in the context of foreign travel seems obscure, but inevitable. Having a few American fellow travelers is part of the irony. Yes I want new experiences and cultural insights (but preferably on my terms) and Ohhhh the comforts of home.
Next stop India.
